COUNTRIES VISITED:New York
PLACES VISITED:Syracuse
SUGGESTED DURATION:1 Days
Start with a visit to the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. Explore the wetlands, migratory birds, and enjoy natural beauty. There's also a seasonal drive route which I highly recommend. Don’t forget your binoculars! Take a drive along the Erie Canal route. Admire the locks, bridges, and visit the Mentz Church, a historic church founded by settlers. Don't forget to grab a bite at a local eatery. Some regional specialties are salt potatoes! Later check out the Montezuma Audubon Center where one can spot wildlife, including birds, turtles, and bald eagles. If you’re a birdwatcher, bring your field guide and identify as many species as you can! Try renting a kayak to wander through the calm waters. Explore the hidden channels and coves. Then dine at a cozy local restaurant. Try some freshwater fish or farm dishes. If a hotel is needed, there are many in nearby Auburn. We recommend the Holiday Inn -we can gladly book for you. Enjoy your time in this picturesque corner of NYS!

Hiking in Erie Canal and Wine Country
Montezuma is steeped in history. It stands along the Seneca River, its roots entwined with the past. The Erie Canal, a marvel of engineering, once flowed through this land, bringing commerce and life to its shores. The echoes of boatmen, traders, and travelers still resonate. Imagine hiking through gorgeous, untamed trails that wind through lush forests. The air carries the scent of pine and earth, and sunlight filters through leaves, dappling the ground. The Montezuma Heritage Park beckons with its mix of history and wilderness. Here, you’ll find the perfect blend of adventure and reflection. The trails lead you deeper into the heart of nature, where birdsong and rustling leaves accompany your journey. As you walk, keep an eye out for glimpses of wildlife—the flash of a deer’s tail, the darting flight of a bird. The landscape changes with the seasons, from vibrant green in spring to fiery hues in autumn.
