Traveling the World with Jimmy Buffett

While the great Jimmy Buffett was many things — performer, writer, restauranteur and bar aficionado — at his core, he was a prolific songwriter. Many of his most popular songs inspired people to dream about traveling to tropical islands and foreign lands, both real and fictional. As we remember Jimmy Buffett, let’s take a tour to some of the places his songs took us to, places that inspired many to travel in search of their own personal Margaritaville.

“But now I think about the good times, down in the Caribbean sunshine.”

Jimmy’s was a tropical soul, a man most at peace when the trade winds blew through his hair. “If there’s a heaven for me, I’m sure it has a beach attached,” he wrote, most likely with his flip-flops off and his feet sinking into the powder-soft sand. His love of the Caribbean was real, and you’ll catch references to places like St. Thomas, Aruba, Martinique, San Juan and Jamaica throughout his songs. While each island has its own unique appeal, Jamaica, in particular, is a delight to visit. From climbing up Dunn’s River Falls and biking down Blue Mountain to exploring historic sugarcane plantations and sampling the island’s rum, you can have so many adventures here, you just might write a song about them.

“It was too much tequila or not quite enough.”

Jimmy knew there’s more to Mexico than tequila, but he never shied away from a drink every now and then. In fact, he was so taken with the country and its people, he even got a tattoo of “a real beauty, a Mexican cutie,” if you take the “Margaritaville” lyrics at face value. Though his song “Mexico” is probably a more reliable reflection of his thoughts about the destination, when he wrote “Oh, Mexico, it sounds so sweet with the sun sinkin’ low, the moon so bright likes to light up the night, make everything alright.” The best part about traveling to Mexico is its proximity to the U.S. In just a few short hours, you can be in Cancun or Cabo, Playa del Carmen or Puerto Vallarta, with a beach underfoot, a margarita in hand and a gorgeous sunset painting the end of a blissful day.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands

“Changes in latitude. Changes in attitude.”

Jimmy didn’t limit himself to tropical destinations, noting that when one changes one’s latitude, a positive change in attitude quickly follows. Judging by how often he mentioned global destinations in his lyrics — including Paris, Mozambique, Brazil, Casablanca, England, China and so many more — his passport must have had more ink than a California biker’s arm. Of all the places he mentioned, especially in the traveling song, “Far Side of the World,” Amsterdam seems the most Jimmy-ish. Legalized cannabis jokes aside, this is a city where the weird and the wonderful walk hand in hand, where you can bike or boat effortlessly through town to see the swirling colors and shapes of the Van Gogh Museum or the bright neon lights of the Electric Ladyland museum. It’s where the Red Light District shines brightest during the day, when you can better appreciate the monuments and churches of the city’s oldest neighborhood, and the scent of flowers follows you wherever go. It’s a wild ride however you slice it.

Galápagos Islands

“Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call.”

Setting sail across the water is a recurring theme throughout many of Jimmy’s hit songs. A boat represented a change of scenery, a chance to escape and keep your dreams afloat. “These moments we’re left with, may you always remember, these moments are shared by few; there’s wind in our hair and there’s water in our shoes, honey, it’s been a lovely cruise,” he wrote, lamenting the end of one such voyage. Setting sail with Jimmy in your heart (or in your AirPods) brings you closer to his music, whether you’re cruising to visit multiple countries in one journey, island-hopping on a luxury yacht or taking an expedition voyage to Antarctica or the Galápagos Islands. Whichever cruise you choose, the result is the same: freedom, exploration, adventure and the opportunity to find yourself late one evening at a beach bar, the palm trees swaying overhead, the waves lulling you to stay, about to bite into your very own cheeseburger in paradise.
